Writer Talk

The teachers that I work with often tell me that conferencing with writers overwhelms them because they aren't certain what to look for in student writing or what to say when they find it. This is why the coach

in me appreciates books like this one

and this

one.

Calkins and Culham never suggest…

Learning to See, Unlearning to Judge

Interested in lesson study? Rely upon Danielson's framework? Use components of clinical observation to do the work that you do? I just wanted to recommend that you take a peek at the resources provided in Nina's ning relevant to Australia's E5 Instructional Model. If you scroll down, you will find documents that explain this model, the nature of teacher rounds inside Australian schools, and ppts that you can share with others. If… Continue

GoodReads link for possible books for book study...

I hope this link works and you are able to see the list of books I have created at GoodReads.  For books that I currently have copies of, I wrote brief previews or reviews depending on how much of the book I have read.  Anyone have any preferences as to which book they would like to read and discuss next year here and/or at WNYLIT meetings?See More

Cris Tovini's work and Strategies That Work are great comprehension resources. Another great resource I like is Text Savvy by Sara Daunis and Maria Cassiani Iams. It is a very easy, quick read that emphasizes the essential reading skills…

Wow. There are quite a few I could recommend when it comes to comprehension. I'm a pretty big fan of Cris Tovani's work and Strategies That Work by Anne Goudvis and Stephanie Harvey. This is a great resource too.

Alexis, I wish I could add more to this conversation. We are in the middle of creating our RtI Plan and Process, and our interventions are more about best practices and not about a "program." Sorry!

Read Aloud - looking for resources

I've been revisiting 'Read Aloud' and I think I've missed its potential as a strategy to improve comprehension - particularly the 'think aloud' part. Does anyone know any resources (on line) that could support me to develop this strategy in my classroom? I think this is an underrated strategy.Cheers NinaSee More
